AVNIR-2

Advanced Visible and Near Infrared Radiometer type 2 (AVNIR-2) is a successor to the AVNIR on Advanced Earth Observation Satellite (ADEOS) launched in August 1996.

The main difference of specification from the AVNIR is instantaneous field-of-view (IFOV). AVNIR-2 provides 10-meter resolution images compared with 16 m of AVNIR in multi-spectral region.
It is realized by an improvement of CCD detectors (AVNIR: 5,000 pixels per CCD, AVNIR-2: 7,000 pixels per CCD) and improvement of its electronics.

Another difference is pointing angle. The pointing angle of AVNIR-2 is +-44 degrees for prompt observation of disaster struck area.
